Direct access to the design team
Our team creates and revises the 3D packaging designs in-house, so questions and changes go directly to the people developing the case, foam or crate.
Defense & military
Vol Case supplies custom military cases, foam inserts, wood crates and ATA cases for defense contractors and military equipment manufacturers. We package military equipment, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), communications equipment, sensors and larger systems for shipment, testing and field use.
Free design & quoting. No obligation.
Packaging options
The right packaging depends on the complete equipment set, its weight and how it will be moved. We can supply the case, foam, crate or any combination.

For portable equipment and field kits, we help select a case and design the interior to fit the complete equipment set. Choose from brands including Pelican, SKB, NANUK and Condition 1.
Explore cases
Order fitted foam for new cases or packaging you already own. We CNC route or waterjet cut the inserts to hold equipment and accessories in place.
Explore custom foam
For large, heavy or unusually shaped equipment, we design the base, supports and enclosure together. Crates are supplied throughout the eastern United States.
Explore wood crates
For equipment that needs a custom-size case and repeated transport, we build the enclosure and interior around how it will be loaded, opened and moved.
Explore ATA casesSecure information and design
Our secure enclave supports eligible controlled unclassified information (CUI), so you can share the technical detail needed for packaging design without scrubbing it first.

We support fast turnarounds for time-sensitive projects. Share the required date early so we can review the design work, available materials and production schedule before confirming delivery.

Layout details
Professional packaging helps people find the right part, remove it without difficulty and see what needs to be packed before leaving the site.
We group equipment by how it is used and give small accessories clear locations. Labels or a layout sheet can help distinguish similar pockets and make missing items easier to spot.
Foam supports the main body while leaving clearance around connectors, fittings and other delicate features. Finger and hand slots make removal easier. We choose the material and density for the part's weight, sensitivity and use.
Lid straps, removable trays and separate compartments can make room for accessories. An interchangeable insert can accommodate different equipment sets within the same case.

Wood crates and ATA cases
Large equipment needs support at the points designed to carry its weight. We build custom wood crates and ATA cases around the equipment's size, support points and loading method. Blocking, bracing and restraints can keep the load in place while leaving clearance around delicate surfaces and protruding parts. Removable panels or a ramp can make loading and unloading easier.
We build to the military packaging specifications confirmed for your project. Our wood crates are stamped for international export, and all our wood products meet ISPM-15 export requirements. ISPM-15 covers wood treatment and marking; it does not establish compliance with military packaging specifications or ATA performance requirements.
Waterproof barrier bagging with desiccant is available for moisture protection. If the equipment needs to be packed at your facility, we can plan on-site crating after reviewing the location, equipment and access.

Project examples

Military drone system
Three Pelican 1745 Air cases organized a complete drone system with fitted foam and lid storage. The program included 41 design revisions as the equipment changed and grew into repeat production.

Nuclear-defense components
We developed foam layouts for nitrogen-bagged components, moving from routed foam-only prototypes to waterjet-cut production. We also supplied foam lining for shipping crates the customer had sourced elsewhere.

Project requirements
Tell us which packaging specifications, materials, tests and markings your project requires. We review them with you before production. A case name or brand alone does not establish that the finished packaging meets a particular specification.
We review applicable DFARS clauses and Berry Amendment sourcing requirements for each project, including the materials and documentation needed. Share the contract requirements early so we can confirm what applies to the packaging.
Common applications
The details vary between an early prototype, a field kit and a large shipment. These guides explain the packaging choices for each use.
Portable systems moving between demonstrations, testing and customer reviews may need packaging that changes with the hardware. See how case and foam design can support those stages.
Explore cases for defense prototypesBatteries, controllers, payloads and accessories often travel together. See examples of complete kits arranged across cases for transport and field use.
Explore drone, robot and comms kitsAirframes, robotic systems and other oversized assemblies may need custom bases and planned lifting access. See how crating accounts for their weight and shape.
Explore large transport packagingSensors, optics and test equipment can be sensitive to pressure on particular surfaces. See how support locations and foam selection help protect those features.
Explore precision instrument packagingWhen several teams use the same equipment, a consistent layout helps each kit open and repack the same way. See how approved designs support repeated builds.

Provide an equipment list, dimensions, weights and available CAD files or photos. Include quantities, the required date and how the packaging will be transported and used. Use the approved transfer method for controlled information.
We prepare the proposed packaging design and quote, then make the changes you request. If a physical fit check would help, we can make a prototype. Physical prototypes are quoted separately.
After approval, we build the packaging and check fit and access. We keep approved designs and revisions for future orders. Tell us about equipment changes before the next build so we can review what needs updating.
Defense startups
An early demonstration and a later production shipment may need different packaging. We help defense startups plan around the equipment they have today and the requirements expected for delivery to their customer.
Tell us which components are final, which may change and what the next demonstration or shipment needs to achieve. We can help determine whether an updated foam insert can use the current case or whether the changes call for different packaging. Bringing those questions into development helps you plan for the next stage before ordering production quantities.
